Our review
Big Time Gaming was founded in 2011 in Sydney by Nik Robinson, Ian Schmidt and Huw McIntosh, but the studio's structural importance to the industry dates from a single title: Bonanza (2016). Bonanza introduced the Megaways engine — a mechanic where reel heights vary spin-to-spin, producing up to 117,649 ways to win per spin depending on the reel configuration. The math design was genuinely new, and the industry response was immediate.
The own-studio catalog remains small — around 40 slots — but the hit rate is unusually high. Bonanza (2016), Extra Chilli (2018), Danger! High Voltage (2017), White Rabbit Megaways (2017), Star Clusters Megaclusters (2020), Lil Devil and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Megaways continue to occupy rotation slots at every major operator. The comic-book art direction, distinctive audio design and mechanical intelligence hold up years after release.
The licensing business is where BTG's economics now sit. The Megaways engine is licensed to Pragmatic Play, Blueprint Gaming, Red Tiger, iSoftBet, Kalamba, Yggdrasil and 20+ other studios — the vast majority of Megaways slots in the market are third-party titles built on BTG's engine. Evolution acquired BTG in 2021 alongside NetEnt, Red Tiger and NoLimit City, consolidating the entire Megaways patent under one owner. Release cadence has slowed materially post-acquisition, but the licensing revenue makes new releases less strategically necessary.
Strengths
- +Megaways is one of the most successful mechanical patents in slot history
- +Extra Chilli and Bonanza remain rotation staples 8+ years after release
- +Distinctive art direction (comic-book Bonanza, chess-themed White Rabbit)
- +Post-Evolution acquisition gives strong distribution
Weaknesses
- −Release cadence has slowed materially since the Evolution acquisition
- −Small own-catalog (40+ vs Pragmatic 500+)
- −Newer Megaways titles feel derivative of the originals
