Our review

Yggdrasil Gaming was founded in 2013 by Fredrik Elmqvist, the former CEO of NetEnt, and quickly positioned itself as the studio for developers frustrated with the constraints of the incumbent providers. The Norse mythology branding wasn't accidental — the studio wanted to signal that it was building something structurally different, and GEMIX (2015) made the case. Cluster-pays at that time was a novelty; Yggdrasil made it a durable format.

The catalog now spans 130+ own slots, with Vikings Go Berzerk (2016) and its follow-ups anchoring the enthusiast segment, and Vault of Anubis, Lucky Neko and Nirvana carrying the mainstream. The proprietary GATI framework lets operators reconfigure bonus mechanics and payout curves post-integration — a level of runtime flexibility no other major studio offers. The BOOST framework provides a shared bonus-mechanic layer across multiple slots for cross-slot promotional structures.

Beyond its own studio, Yggdrasil operates the YG Masters partner program — a distribution and technology platform that ships boutique studios (Peter & Sons, Bulletproof Games, ReelPlay, and others) under the Yggdrasil umbrella. This effectively turned the studio into a hybrid publisher-developer. The trade-off is that partner titles vary considerably in quality — a Peter & Sons or ReelPlay title is not the same product as a first-party Yggdrasil release. Own-studio release cadence has slowed since 2022 as the platform business took priority.
